Two methods are commonly used to evaluate a pet food’s palatability. The first one is the versus or twopan test. Designed to evaluate the preference of the animal for one or the other of the two products tested, this method is proven to be very reliable and efficient for discrimination. The second common approach is the acceptability measurement, also called monadic testing or one-bowl testing. This evaluation, mainly used to confirm the animal’s appreciation of a diet, is also sometimes used to evaluate the palatability of a diet, despite it is less discriminant.

Experts from Diana Pet Food developed the Liking test, a new methodology, based on “in-home like” one-bowl distribution, including new criteria that significantly relate to pet owners' appreciation of their animal’s satisfaction.

In this study, the palatability of commercial cat diets recommended for weight management was assesed using versus and Liking test at Panelis, Diana Pet Food's expert center in palatability measurement. Both methods gave a similar ranking of the products, but the use of the Liking test brought additional information such as % of finished bowl and food consumption levels, which are key for a weight management program.
